Western Art and Desert Landscape Paintings for Sale

New York-born Frederic Sackrider Remington is synonymous with the Old West. His gift for penetrating images of life on the western frontier began at a very young age, when sketching cowboys and Indians took precedence over arithmetic.

At a pivotal point in his career, Remington was sent out west to paint portraits of Army soldiers, earning the nickname “The Soldier Artist.” His fame made him a favorite of western Army officers fighting the last Native American battles. In time he got exclusive access to his subjects which augmented his reputation among eager fans of his work. One of his western horse paintings, Cavalry in an Arizona Sandstorm, galvanized his thoughts about the territory so often portrayed in his work, “...the heat was awful and the dust rose in the clouds. Men get sulky and go into a comatose state--the fine alkali dust penetrates everything but the canteens.”

On a 2015 episode of “Antiques Roadshow,” Ty Dodge walked in with a 120-year-old Frederic Remington oil portrait in his family’s possession for decades. Appraised at $7,500 for insurance purposes in the 1960s, the 1896 oil painting hung on Dodge’s living room wall for years. On the Roadshow, Dodge learned his western painting and the letter that accompanied it were valued up to $800,000.

Featured in the painting was Dodge’s great-grandfather in military attire standing in front of a dusty desert landscape. It was part of a series Remington had painted representing each branch of the Army, this one for infantrymen. The letter, which the artist wrote three years later, commends Febiger on his military achievements and suggests they get together for a drink soon.

According to records, the western style painting hung in the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, NY until 1938 when Dodge’s grandmother made a deal to acquire it. Following “Antiques Roadshow,” it was donated to the Birmingham Museum of Art to be included with its collection of Remington’s bronze sculptures.
