Renee Noel
Longmont, Colorado
Artist Renee Noel, based in Northern Colorado, creates striking cloudscapes and landscapes inspired by the region's ever-changing skies and her travels. "I look up to the sky for my muse, hunting clouds that excite me and inspire my next piece," says Renee. Growing up in a family of musicians and artists, she was encouraged to explore creativity from a young age, and her aunt, a visual artist and leader in the South Pasadena art community, introduced her to museums and galleries. A defining milestone in her artistic journey was earning a scholarship to study figure drawing at the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Renee paints from a spacious home studio that she and her husband designed, filled with natural light and French doors, where she can fully immerse herself in the process. When not painting, she enjoys spending time with her family, participating in her local art community, and playing with her energetic Labrador.
Artist Statement
My compositions explore the natural world, with clouds as my constant muse. I “cloud hunt” along the Front Range in Northern Colorado and on my travels, often in the early morning or evening, seeking the most striking formations and vibrant hues for my next piece. Working in a representational style, I paint on oversized gallery-wrapped canvases using a dry brush technique, blending acrylics to create forms that are both intricate and simplified.
I draw inspiration from the mountains and skies of Northern Colorado, but I remain observant wherever I go, always looking up for the next composition. My process begins with photography, followed by a photo-based layout, blocked-in background color, and a light drawing to guide the painting.
My goal is to create dramatic, awe-inspiring works that capture the grandeur of nature. Through my paintings, I hope viewers slow down, breathe, and share in the gratitude I feel for the beauty that surrounds us.
