She extends her right hand over the infant John the Baptist and lifts her left hand above her infant Son, as if guiding them. An angel glances at the viewer (Louvre version) or John (London version).
Religious paintings often featured Mary in a grand setting, on a throne, or in heaven. Da Vinci, on the other hand, depicted her sitting on the ground in a rocky grotto. Unlike the usual heavily stylized clothes in earlier classical paintings, he put Mary in subtle garments that flow with her movement. Da Vinci used a technique called sfumato to soften the transition between colors and tones. It created a more natural and intimate scene, and by extension, made Mary appear more human and approachable.

Scipione Borghese (1576 - 1633) was a powerful cardinal and one of Italy's most influential art collectors. He was born in Artena, Italy, to a struggling family. His uncle funded his education as his father faced financial problems. In a huge turn of fate, Borghese was studying law when his uncle was appointed as Pope Paul V. He later became the pope’s right hand and the second most important person in the Church.
As a cardinal, Borghese lived a double life. One was a man of God who bridged the pope and the people. The other was a prince of the church who used his position to get what he wanted. Although they shared different moral values, Borghese and Pope Paul V worked together and amassed a great collection of Renaissance and Baroque art.
A patron of Bernini, Borghese commissioned the artist to sculpt The Rape of Persephone (1622), Apollo and Daphne (1625), and his two busts (1632). He also purchased paintings from famous artists, such as Titian's Sacred and Profane Love (1514). Although he was an avid art collector, not all of his collection came from honorable means. For instance, Pope Paul V sent him hundreds of confiscated paintings from Cavalier D'Arpino after the artist failed to pay his taxes. The pope also secretly transferred Raphael's Deposition (1507) from the Baglioni Chapel to Borghese. Likewise, Borghese claimed Caravaggio's Madonna and Child with St. Anne (1606) by making sure the cardinals of St. Peter's Basilica would reject it due to its style.
Borghese built a premier collection of classical art. Many significant works were made and preserved because of him. The Borghese Gallery in Rome is a testament to his love for art.
