About this artwork

A cherub floats near the ceiling of a small room as a line of clouds drifts across the space. Below, a brown dog wearing a red collar sits on a black-and-yellow checkered floor, looking up toward the angel above. A crucifix hangs on the wall, while a small table holds a candle and a vase of flowers. Artist Edward McHugh draws inspiration from the Dutch masters, whose works often featured refined perspectives and religious subjects. He introduces a note of humor into that formal tradition by placing his dog within the scene.
