Artist Edward McHugh creates surreal figurative paintings that place human and animal forms within abstract, dreamlike spaces. His works explore identity, vulnerability, transformation, and the psychological tension within color and form. "I'm drawn to strong subject matter and bold palettes where vivid color becomes a language of its own, amplifying the psychological charge of each piece," says Edward. His influences are shaped by extensive travel and time spent in museums around the world, with the Vatican Museum leaving a particularly lasting impression, reinforcing the symbolism that echoes his Irish Catholic upbringing in Boston. Edward believes artistic growth comes through discipline and consistency, showing up to the studio each day with intention and focus. He works from a neat, organized space he calls his "chapel," accompanied by curated playlists and film soundtracks that support his process. When not making art, Edward enjoys cycling, kayaking, and watching films.
Artist Statement
My work juxtaposes human and animal forms within abstract environments that feel both constructed and organic, familiar yet dreamlike. I am drawn to strong subject matter and bold palettes, where vivid color becomes a language of its own, amplifying the psychological charge of each piece.
Through the contrast of abstract design elements with the human body in nature, I explore identity, vulnerability, and transformation. Surreal and sometimes humorous undertones invite viewers into this space, encouraging them to question what is real and reflect on how inner landscapes shape how we move through the world.
My creative process depends on discipline as much as inspiration. I believe it is essential to show up in the studio each day, to work consistently, and to place oneself in the right environment for creativity to develop. Like writing, I see it as mostly work and partly inspiration, where persistence carries the ideas forward.
My influences come from extensive travel and time spent in museums across the world, from small institutions to major collections such as the Louvre, the Uffizi, and the Musée d’Orsay. A particularly lasting impression came from the Vatican Museums, where the symbolism and atmosphere deeply resonated with me and reinforced themes that appear in my work, shaped in part by my Irish Catholic upbringing in Boston.
