About this artwork

This surreal landscape painting by artist Edward McHugh was inspired by a photograph he took in the small town of Concrete, Washington, a gateway to the scenic North Cascades Highway. The image was captured from an unusual vantage point beneath the slide of an abandoned children's playground, giving the composition a distinctive perspective. Layers of local history surround the setting, from author Tobias Wolff's connection to the town to nearby Desolation Peak, where Jack Kerouac once worked as a fire lookout. The result feels both rural and dreamlike, shaped by memory, place, and imagination.
