About this artwork

Artist Edward McHugh riffs on a classic portrait, reimagining the familiar reference in his own surreal visual language. The figure appears pale with deep red lips, gazing directly at the viewer, her short reddish hair framed by a dark, indistinct hat and a dress patterned with subtle flecks.
