About this artwork

Vibrant hydrangeas contrast against the blue sky. Artist Jakki Kouffman begins this midsummer sunset scene with a pumice-infused acrylic underpainting and completes it with dry pigment pastel. Layered dots, dashes, and lines characterize the solid objects, flat surfaces, and atmospheric effects. Lending additional nuance to the tableau, she applied different amounts of pressure to both hard and soft pastels, amplifying the illusion of deep space from high up on a dune. Jakki suggests framing the piece under glass for protection.
