About this artwork
Located north of Abiquiu Lake in New Mexico, Cerro Pedernal is a distinctive 9,866-foot mesa known to the Tewa people as Tsip'in, or "obsidian mountain." Artist Georgia O’Keeffe painted the landmark nearly thirty times and called it her "private mountain." Artist Jakki Kouffman reinterprets its iconic shape and commanding scale in this acrylic painting, bringing a contemporary perspective to the celebrated New Mexico landscape.
