About this artwork
A well-intentioned solution to melting ice caps gives displaced polar bears their own boats, but the idea backfires when one adapts too well. The bear turns pirate, boarding commercial fishing vessels and stealing their salmon. Rendered with crisp light and rhythmic waves, the artwork blends humor with unease. The bear acts as both subject and symbol, shifting from being a displaced animal to a transformed one. It is no longer a victim of change, but an agent within it.
Artist Keith Thomson used oil paint and ink to create this piece.
