About this artwork

Mr. and Mrs. Anderson commissioned a formal family portrait, insisting their beloved pet elephant, Elbert, be included. Elbert is family, after all. When the couple unveils the portrait, viewers could not resist calling it "the elephant in the room," assuming it hinted at scandal or an affair. There was no secret, only an adored and and giant companion. Embarrassed by the unintended metaphor, the Andersons have decided to part with the painting. Artist Keith Thomson used oil paint and ink to create this surreal, fictional scene.
