Turn of the Century
About this artwork
A theatrical scene of two nude women develops in artist John Kelly's realistic portrait. Painted in the studio of the writer Zoe Besmond de Senneville with the actress Alice Cathelineau, this entwined pair moves through the darkened studio in a charged drama. Pure light pours in from the unseen windows while the saturated color of their wrapped clothing frames the scene. One model is abandoned in an emotional state, while the other watches, hiding her face, creating a microcosm of the act of looking, challenging the viewer, shares John.
