About this artwork

Part of John's series of portraits of the Parisian artist Ninon Luang Rath. This sensitive image uses available natural light to accentuate the cobalt blue of the model's kimono and the gentle curves of her figure. The light references Rembrandt's Danae, depicting the Greek myth of Zeus visiting the sequestered daughter of a king in the form of a shaft of sunlight. Anticipation mixed with melancholy of the subject's face further reveals the complicated scene.
