About this artwork

After visiting Florence, Onelio painted this scene of the Piazza Del Mercato Nuovo. The day was threatening rain so all the vendors had covered their wares with tarps hanging in broad sweeping arrangements. The statue represents Giovanni Villani one of Florence's founders and leading merchant economists who emphasized three assumptions about morality & historical events. One of these being that excess brings disaster. His statue poignantly overlooks the the designer leather apparel and bags.
