About this artwork

The artwork features a close-up of a figure's black shoes and blue socks. It draws inspiration from Baroque passacaille dancers showcasing an elegant and lively 17th-century performance of the French opera Armide by Jean-Baptiste Lully. Artist Nicholas Robertson's wife, who enjoys dancing, watched the performance and repeated the steps while wearing appropriate shoes. He observed the process, took sequential photographs, made notes, and created drawings that informed this painting.
