About this artwork

An ostrich with a gargantuan head watches over a tiny nest of quail eggs resting on a thimble atop a wooden stool. Its wide-eyed, serious expression contrasts with the delicate scale of the eggs, giving the scene a playful, surreal quality. Artist Dwight Smith uses watercolor to heighten the contrast between the imposing bird and its surprisingly small charge.
