About this artwork

A dark hazel eye gazes directly outward, surrounded by white roses dotted with delicate water droplets. Artist David Shepherd uses photorealistic detail and subtle light to give the eye a luminous quality. The composition reflects on the uniqueness of individual identity and the shared qualities that connect us. His ongoing series of eyes surrounded by flowers and petals explores the contrast between individual identity and the universal beauty of the human eye. Each carries its own distinctive character, yet the similarities shared across humanity run far deeper than outward differences. All people descend from generations of survivors and share an extraordinary degree of genetic similarity.
