About this artwork

A woman's portrait sits at the center of the collage, beside a cutout of a ship braving turbulent waves. A speech bubble made of air-dry clay appears to emerge from the woman's lips, while vintage imagery and details fill the surrounding space. Through this artwork, Darlene McElroy conveys the idea that we survive life's storms by becoming the tempest—strong and powerful.
