About this artwork
In this small piece, there's nevertheless a sense of space, of openness, and at the same time one of enclosure and containment, says David. We can think of a flag, a house plan, a plaque. A sprung cluster of letterforms are hanging, poised on the corners of this central shape, but they give an impression of movement. The surface texture was arrived at with pigments washed into and wiped from layers of wax, which were then abraded and polished.
