About this artwork

Artist Benjamin Thomas paints a portrait of a woman named Crystal. She poses in profile with her wavy hair tied in a bun and her bangs obscuring her eyes. He delicately displays a quaint relationship between light and shadow. This is a great example of embracing my mistakes, says Benjamin. The dark side of the canvas was bumped and cracked. Instead of a problem, I saw it as a moment to create more cracks as a textural complement to the smooth skin of the portrait.
