The Pond in Evening Light
About this artwork
Artist Patricia Prendergast has spent many early mornings painting at this pond near her home, but this is a special piece inspired by the desire to depict the landscape at night. She used a piece of black pastel paper and imagined what the pond might look like under a moonlit sky. I knew the light cast by the moon, rather than the sun, would create a small range of values with subdued colors, she explains. I was careful to choose neutral colors that would create a peaceful, but not somber, mood for the viewer.
