About this artwork

A tranquil scene from a stretch on the American River in Sacramento, California. Artist Patricia Prendergast painted this piece by enlarging a smaller plein air painting. When I got home, I reworked the composition a bit and then blocked in the major shapes with pastels, shares Patricia. She continues her process by soaking the pastels with rubbing alcohol, making sure for drips to form to create texture. Once it was dry, I added layers of pastels while trying to allow some of the underpainting to show through. Patricia suggests framing the painting under glass.
