Artwork

An unclaimed polar bear sits at the center of artist Keith Thomson's surrealist piece. The charismatic creature patiently revolves around the conveyor belt among a crowd with calm composure. "Airport baggage claims offer a painter a singular mix of dreary fluorescents contrasted with shiny metal," jests Keith. He presents a playful hothouse of human eccentricity through whimsical storytelling.

Keith Thomson

Birmingham, Alabama

Keith Thomson is a mixed-media artist whose art is packed with wit, humor, and ingenuity. He began his artistic career as a political cartoonist in the 90’s, a background that is reflected in the sharp storytelling of his artwork. His portfolio relishes in the escapism offered by art; each painting, though realistic in style, presents a scenario with a surreal and, at times, ironic twist. To begin a work, he sketches out his idea using an animation software. Then, he transfers the sketch onto the canvas and finally starts to layer oil paint. In addition to painting, he writes spy novels and nonfiction articles.

Absolutely love the painting that Keith created for me. I was looking to capture the spirit and excitement of this once-in-a-lifetime moment and Keith nailed it. Keith and the UGallery team made the entire experience easy and fun. I got regular updates and progress photos along the way.

This piece reflected much of the past year, 2020, to me. In it I saw an individual stopping briefly to do what is needed to keep going through the darkness. Its simple and powerful in that regard, I suppose that's the power of art.
