Artwork

An ornate flower crown rests on a young girl's head in artist Darlene McElroy's expressionist portrait. "It is a Hispanic tradition to be offered to the church by their families when they become nuns," elaborates Darlene. A metallic golden halo gleams behind the subject with an intense radiance. Darlene plays with circular motifs in different structures of the composition.

Darlene McElroy

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Darlene McElroy sees creating art as similar to reading Turkish coffee grounds. A story becomes revealed as one looks at the surface, texture and color. Her works use a variety of materials ranging from acrylic paints to photo transfers and collage. She currently lives in New Mexico and has been greatly influenced by the work of Robert Rauschenberg. She encourages viewers to search for their narrative interpretation when viewing a work.

I recently purchased an awesome piece by Darlene off this site and was delighted with it. The painting itself had beautiful depth but the addition of the 3D texture was icing on the cake! And of course her evocative subject matter and symbolism tied it all together into one wonderful and unique package! Hope to buy another of hers some day!!!

Lovely painting. Mysterious and beautiful

First, thank you so much for purchasing my painting. The differences you see in it, in relation to its depiction on the web, may be due to the device you were using. Depending on how your computer/tablet/phone is calibrated, an image can appear darker or lighter on the web than it is in reality. In addition, the lighting in your environment and the lighting in the environment where the painting was photographed are most likely not the same. Try placing the painting in areas with different lighting. If you go into a gallery, you will often see them playing with the lighting on a piece of art. With art, lighting is everything. I work in very thin layers of color and add depth with dimensional collaged elements. I hope this helps.

A fine work of art, but it's darker than the version on UGallery. The face glows in the online image but is more grey in reality, with much less depth, and the golden medallions are far less orange. The image is visually flatter and duller than depicted.

We have two pieces by Darlene; and they are so wonderful to live with! We lived in Santa Fe for 11 years, and count Darlene as a friend. Her innate creativity and energy are astonishing. We continue to enjoy seeing her new and unique output in the form of artworks and books!

Just added a lot of new art to the site that I hope you enjoy. I can't create a new painting without it having a narrative. It is the stories that make me want to paint.

Looking forward to working with Ugallery and showing my work to a broader group of people who love narrative art.
