About this artwork

The painting depicts the Hanging Temple, which takes the character Xuan from Chinese Taoism and Kong from Buddhism. It was later renamed the Hanging Temple because the whole temple is like hanging on a cliff, and in Chinese, Xuan and Hanging sound the same, hence the name. The Hanging Temple is a unique temple that combines Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. Its architecture is distinctive, renowned for its precariousness and steepness, and it was selected as one of the ten endangered buildings in the world by Time Magazine in 2010.
