About this artwork

Deep purple and red leaves stand out against a background of bright foliage. Artist Catherine McCargar, an avid gardener and watercolorist, drew inspiration from the way the sun lit up the leaves in her garden. She paints the foreground with careful detail and suggests the background by her deft brushwork reminiscent of Japanese sumi-e painting.
