About this artwork

A black skimmer comes in for a hard landing, kicking up sand with its wings still raised. Its crisp black-and-white plumage, bright orange-and-black bill, and bluish shadow stand out sharply against the white watercolor paper. Artist Emil Morhardt notes that large flocks of these birds occupy their own spot on Santa Barbara's East Beach for much of the winter.
