About this artwork

The watercolor paper for this painting was prepared with a base of gesso. I like to apply watercolors to this surface as I can move the paint around easily, and create the natural easy feeling I wanted for this piece. The home is Burn's cottage in Columbia, California. I named it French Laundry because a French laundry was on the same site back in the early gold rush days. I chose this view of the place so that I could paint all the irises that were in full bloom. I stood at the end of the row of them, and painted en plein air on a recent sunny spring morning.
