About this artwork

I conceived this painting as a slightly deceptive subject. While the scene looks inviting and warm, there is a story I was striving for. We are probably all familiar with those moments when a large gathering for dinner and drinks becomes a bit tedious when we find ourselves trying cordially to attend to a conversation that has turned dull. In this case the listener's body language reflects feigned interest. I excluded the speaker who is out somewhere to the right. The listener is surrounded by empty chairs that indicate several other listeners have made their exit leaving the woman to patiently await some other distraction. The painting is varnished, wired and ready for display. The edges are a clean white gesso.
