About this artwork

Artist Mary Pratt displays three geishas in bright kimonos, each holding a parasol. The subjects walk toward the red temple, the color representing strength, peace, and protection. "The word geisha comes from the Japanese word gei meaning art, and sha meaning person," shares Mary. "Geishas are artisans and purveyors of traditional Japanese culture." She harbors admiration for geishas after purchasing a porcelain figurine while visiting the UN building in New York when she was seven and reading as much information as possible about them.
