About this artwork

In this painting, David used his signature negative painting style to capture the figure in detail without actually painting detail. He gessoed the canvas in black and then painted around the areas he intended to be black. Parts of the figures and the architecture were not painted - the space around them was painted. The posture and arrangement of the characters draws us into the scene and builds the narrative about their backgrounds and the conversation.
