About this artwork
Alana's Wallpaper series is a juxtaposition between masculine and feminine. I wanted to create a unique series that stands apart from traditional nature paintings, where the wild and somewhat prehistoric aspects of my animals contrast against their delicate backdrops, says Alana. In this piece, she drew inspiration from the architectural pattern and tile design that adorn her hometown of Santa Barbara.Different techniques and layers of design were implemented to create the wallpaper effect. To keep the patterns consistent, Alana created a stencil to outline the shapes of the flowers and fish, and then she hand painted each individually. Her animals are always painted first, and then she lays out the design around them.
