About this artwork

The Pavane is a slow, solemn dance of the European courts dating back to the 16th century. While the dance went out of style, the music lived on, later to be immortalized by composers such as Maurice Ravel and Fauré. The modern, circus setting in this painting indicates that the title is in irony just as the action of the athletic, scantily clad bodies is a far cry from a royal court.Gold leaf paint has been applied to the structure containing the circus and the peacock's tail. The sides of the canvas are secured with decorative nails.
