About this artwork

Referenced from photos he took of children waiting for ice cream, artist Jamal Sultan paints a balmy night during a blackout. The sight of an ice cream truck slowly meandering around your neighborhood in absolute darkness was both exciting and ominous, says Jamal. I was struck by how the cold colors of artificial lighting in this environment actually appear hot. Jamal uses multiple layers of paint varying in thickness for an enhanced sense of depth and contrast.
