About this artwork
This painting is based on the true story of English Capt. Bartholomew Sharp, who, in 1681 captured a ship, El Santo Rosario, that carried, as he wrote in his diary, “a prize of the lady called Donna Joanna Constanta” who was “the beautifullest creature that my eyes ever beheld in the South Seas.” He had to leave her behind, however, as he and his crew were being pursued by an armada of pirate hunters. At least that’s what he told her.
