About this artwork
Shannon Amidon based her new series of encaustic moth portraits on an imagined journey through a natural history museum. "You turn the corner and are greeted by a wall of pinned insects," Shannon says. "The variety of moths is overwhelmingly beautiful and fascinating. The luna or sometimes called moon moth is a beautiful and mysterious creature that feels like it is from a fairytale." This painting is on a cradled birch wood panel and contains natural mica, metal beads and gold paper moons. The background is made up of a variety of vintage ephemeral materials including old book pages, maps, and letters. These elements quietly appear in some sections of the painting and are completely obscured in other areas.
