About this artwork

A street scene can evoke so many memories. Memories of times past, places visited, events attended and people encountered, all reimagined at a glance. I began Street Scene 1 and 2 thinking mostly about shapes in the abstract. I seem to naturally create a horizon line.... it appears in spite of my intent. The shapes are made without an initial plan, then I build on them to develop balance and harmony. Marks, scratches, drips, color, and pencil lines help create texture and movement. In this case, my abstract wandering gradually took on meaning and the shapes became buildings, and the painting became a street scene. The marks became windows, doorways, and alleys. Street Scene 1 brings to mind Paris in the spring with its avenues of trees.
