About this artwork

Inspired by André Derain's London series, this view of Scituate Harbor moves away from naturalistic color in favor of bold, intense tones. In the foreground, phthalo green, cadmium red, and ultramarine blue are used in sequence, placing the work firmly within a Fauvist approach. Rather than aiming to represent reality, artist Robert Hofherr reinterprets it to create a more expressive and compelling image.
