About this artwork

From a ranch in southern Colorado.... I think animals are often like humans in the way the young are willing to make eye contact and blatantly stare at a person. That curiosity is what I wanted to convey with this portrait. I think the composition reflects that feeling as well. It seems the viewer was taking in the landscape and the calf entered into view and stuck his nose in to ask what the viewer is doing. This is balanced, compositionally, with a bold red underpainting to his left.
