Tetiana Savchenko
Kropyvnytskyi, Ukraine
Ukrainian artist Tetiana Savchenko creates realistic watercolor bird paintings that capture her subjects’ beauty beyond traditional standards. She depicts each bird with no alteration or embellishment. "At some point, I realized that I'm not interested in painting 'perfect' beauty; I'm more drawn to individuality and character," says Tetiana. She developed her practice through observation, experimentation, and a deep curiosity about nature rather than a strictly academic path. Over time, Tetiana refined her approach by studying birds closely and building her voice through exhibitions and competitions. She works in a small, organized studio filled with natural light, often painting in silence to stay focused on detail. When not making art, Tetiana spends time observing birds, playing with her dogs, or cooking for her family.
Artist Statement
I am a Ukrainian watercolor artist, and my path naturally grew out of my interest in nature, especially birds. The more I observed them, the more I wanted to understand and paint them. Rather than following a strict academic path, I developed my style through practice, experimentation with watercolor, and close study of my subjects. Over time, I realized I am not interested in painting "perfect" beauty, but in capturing individuality and character.
I paint bird portraits because they fill me with wonder and curiosity. The longer I observe them, the more their uniqueness reveals itself, and this desire to truly see becomes the starting point of my work. I believe beauty exists beyond standards, and art can help us recognize it. I do not alter or embellish my subjects. I look carefully until beauty becomes evident and admiration replaces criticism.
Working primarily in watercolor, I balance precision with the medium's spontaneity. Transparent, layered washes allow natural textures to emerge, while focused detail in the eyes and beak brings each bird's presence to life. The surrounding white space removes distractions and invites the viewer to come closer.
My process begins with choosing a reference that feels compelling, often through a bird’s pose or expression. I allow the paint to create organic textures, then refine the essential details to complete the work.
