Sally Morris Clark
Beacon, New York
Artist Sally Morris Clark creates abstract compositions that explore the textures, patterns, and forms of nature. She began her creative path in graphic and set design, where she learned to fully immerse herself in a theme and work within a structure. “I start by creating a new set of rules for each series,” says Sally. She paints in a bright and airy purpose-built studio in New York’s Hudson Valley, using Roman Clay and traditional and handmade tools. When not making art, Sally enjoys surfing, hiking with her family, and cooking vegetables from her garden.

Artist Statement
My work is centrally themed around the patterns and textures of the natural world and the subsequent repetition that occurs. Inspiration is taken from the most simplistic and irregular occurrences, such as cracked earth, wave patterns, archipelagos and dunes. For me, representing these patterns often in a grid-like and structured format creates an interesting juxtaposition between the regular and the irregular.
My work blurs the lines between sculpture and painting. I use mediums such as wood,
clay, plaster and modelling paste to create texture and I generally work on large-format
canvas and wood boards. The colors I choose are natural and earthy in tone to further represent the origin of the subject matter.
