René Serrano RodrÃguez
Morelia, Mexico
Artist René Serrano creates vibrant imagined landscapes where geometric forms, organic elements, and a personal visual language come together to suggest alternate worlds. "Inspired by the Greek myth of Hesperus, I begin by meditating on the cosmos and alternate worlds, and draw my deeply internal references from memory and literature," says René. His path to painting began unexpectedly in 1997, when he left a degree in Business Administration to travel through Central Europe as a street musician. Along the way, he encountered the work of artists including Pierre Alechinsky, Fabienne Verdier, and Georges Mathieu, whose approaches to abstraction and gesture helped inspire his decision to pursue art. Today, René works in an organized studio in Morelia, Mexico, where he builds his paintings through layers of acrylic, oil, raw pigments, spray paint, and graphite, often working in silence. Outside the studio, he enjoys listening to his vinyl collection, reading literature, playing guitar, and exploring world history.
Artist Statement
My painting explores the relationship between geometric forms and organic elements to create fragments of imagined worlds. I think of landscape as a kind of cartography of the fictive, where each painting becomes a space between what is seen and what is imagined. My references come from memory, literature, the cosmos, and the idea of alternate worlds rather than from a specific physical place.
A central element of my work is a personal calligraphy that I developed from the human form. During live figure-drawing sessions, I capture silhouettes and gradually transform them into simplified, expressive forms. These marks move through my paintings like traces of a silent musical score, bringing the presence of the human body into imagined landscapes. I think of them as a visual language, where each mark carries a fragment of experience.
I build my paintings through layers of acrylic, oil, raw pigments, spray paint, and graphite. I work intuitively with these materials, allowing lines, colors, and surfaces to accumulate and interact with one another. Each layer becomes part of the history of the painting, with every mark and striation recording something that happened during the process.
My work is influenced by artists such as Fabienne Verdier and Georges Mathieu, particularly their approaches to gesture, abstraction, and visual language. I am interested in creating paintings that remain open to interpretation, inviting the viewer to become both witness and interpreter. What appears at first to be an abstract landscape may reveal another kind of geography, one shaped by memory, imagination, and the traces of human experience.
