Pang Saw Wee
Rawang, Malaysia
Artist Pang Saw Wee creates illustration-style compositions that draw inspiration from manga and highlight the simplicity of watercolor. "I have always liked the art style of Japanese comics, and it has had a great influence on my work," says Pang. His paintings often feature young women, pieced together from various online references. Pang took watercolor lessons as a child but only recently found time to return to the medium. He uses a single Chinese brush in his works and paints in a small studio filled with his supplies. When not making art, Pang enjoys collecting wooden and metal gadgets, reading, and doing outdoor activities with his two kids.
Artist Statement
I love the simplicity of watercolor—just paint, water, and a small Chinese brush.
Though I majored in advertising design and didn’t formally study fine art, I’ve recently returned to painting after taking watercolor lessons as a child. I’ve always been drawn to the style of Japanese comics, and now I’m exploring that influence through illustration-style watercolor painting.
I often pull from a wide range of online references, combining elements I’m drawn to—like backgrounds, objects, and details—into my own compositions. Many of my works feature young women, often wearing glasses, set in scenes built from layers of inspiration. My process is intuitive, playful, and driven by what catches my eye.
