Martin Singer
Calais, France
Artist Martin Singer explores themes of trickery in his assemblages, often blurring the line between the work and its frame. "I want to make the viewer aware that a work of art is subject to its environment," says Martin. Encouraged by his parents, Martin studied fine arts and later taught different visual arts structures. His practice evolved from animation and comics into painting, where he shifts between figurative and abstract styles. Martin lives in France and works in his modest workshop at home, where he listens to the radio and cultural programs while he paints. When not making art, Martin spends his time reading, walking in nature, and watching films and documentaries.

Artist Statement
As is evident in most of my work, I am interested in what is off-screen and, more generally, decentering. The frame, for example, which surrounds the work, acquires a direct relationship with the subject and becomes the work itself.
I want to make the viewer aware that the work of art is subject to its environment. This raises the question: outside of its frame or format, what becomes of the subject? Does it enter a more "true" reality? Thus, many of the works I create have the same gimmick: trickery. I try to give the impression, for example, that a shape is passing through a frame when it is not.
