Mabel Serena
Brescia, Italy
Artist Mabel Serena creates abstract acrylic paintings that explore movement, balance, and transformation through organic forms and nuanced fields of color. "What may appear simple or spontaneous is the result of a gradual process in which structure and intuition work together," says Mabel. Born in Bogotá, Colombia, and now based in Brescia, Italy, she draws on her background in architecture to shape her approach to composition, light, and the relationship between forms. Her artistic influences include the dynamism of Italian Futurism and the organic beauty of Georgia O'Keeffe, whose work inspires her exploration of nature and expressive form. She works from her home studio in the Italian countryside, an ever-changing creative space overlooking a garden and surrounded by woodland. Outside the studio, she enjoys visiting exhibitions, discovering other artists, and spending time with her family.
Artist Statement
My background in architecture shaped the way I see the world, drawing my attention to structure, balance, and the relationships between shapes. These principles continue to inform my abstract paintings, where I explore movement and transformation through organic forms and fields of color.
I work primarily with acrylics on canvas, building compositions through soft gradients, subtle variations in light and shadow, and carefully considered relationships between shapes. My process often begins long before I touch the canvas. I spend considerable time reflecting on an idea and imagining its composition before I begin painting. Once I start, I work intuitively, making deliberate decisions about color, form, and balance as the painting develops.
I am interested in the interplay between structure and spontaneity. Although my paintings may appear simple, each composition emerges through a gradual process of observation, reflection, and adjustment. I draw inspiration from the dynamism of Italian Futurism and the organic, sensual forms found in the work of Georgia O’Keeffe, both of which inform my exploration of movement and nature.
My home studio in the countryside near Brescia, Italy, overlooks a garden and sits beside a beautiful woodland. This connection to the natural world continually feeds my imagination. Through my paintings, I hope to create compositions that feel both balanced and alive, inviting viewers to discover their own sense of movement, harmony, and possibility within the forms.
