Artist Statement
The process of making these paintings is closely connected to the concepts behind them. I create them through a combination of glazing, stamping, painting, drawing, handwriting, transferring, sanding, and layering. This process allows me to develop images and surfaces of color and shape. I use many different tools, sometimes unconventional, that echo the shapes, colors, and subtleties I see around me. I am interested in the play between structure and chaos, intuition and preparation, landscape and memory, texture and color, drawing and painting, and spontaneity and order. Through painting, I explore these ideas every day as I enter my studio.
Alongside this investigation, my paintings have strong ties to events from my memory and daily life. They are an exploration of painting and experience, surrounded by a community of ideas and people. My fascination with the subtleties of my environment, along with the physical nature of the paint, drives me to create.
The details of the landscapes I see, as well as the intricacies of people and relationships, inform my work. Each painting is a personal communication of place and memory, veiled by the formal aspects of painting and process.
Artists I admire include Thomas Nozkowski and Gerhard Richter.
I see my art as a way of connecting with people and will continue to follow its path. I will be painting for the rest of my life and hope that others find meaning in my experience as both a painter and a person.
