Leslie Ann Butler
Portland, Oregon
Abstract painter Leslie Ann Butler has been passionate about making art since childhood. "When I paint, I enter a flowing, altered state of consciousness where the vision emerges, and I do my best to bring it to life," shares Leslie Ann. Her vibrant, meditative abstracts often come to her in moments of reflection or dreams, and she channels these visions into textured, color-rich compositions. Leslie Ann works from the top floor of her Portland home, where four large north-facing windows provide abundant daylight and a sweeping city view. Outside the studio, she is active with the Oregon Humane Society and other local charities, stays fit at the gym, and, with her husband, enjoys entertaining and attending cultural events. Her paintings are held in private collections worldwide, including those of former First Lady Barbara Bush and Michael Jackson, and with clients in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and Stockholm.
Artist Statement
In my work, I explore a place of peace by making sense of life's dualities. Using form, texture, composition, and color, I create a visual rhythm where darkness flows into light and excitement transforms into composure. The creative process extends beyond the physical painting through the eyes of each viewer, evoking thoughts and emotions that connect us beyond the canvas. This exchange is proof that we are not separate.
I work with acrylic paint, gold, silver, and copper leaf, charcoal, and oil pastels. Bold strokes and a dance of color express my passion for life, while form and pattern reflect the beauty and vitality of all living things. The canvas becomes a world where I pour my deepest emotions and invite others to share in the experience.
My ongoing series, titled Illumination, incorporates metallics with color and form, offering a meditation on presence and absence, light and shadow, simplicity and depth. My paintings are held in private collections worldwide, including those of former First Lady Barbara Bush and Michael Jackson, and with clients in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Stockholm, and beyond.
