Kestutis Jauniškis
Vilnius, Lithuania
Artist Kestutis Jauniškis creates modernist landscapes and architecture that explore form and structure. "When you are an artist, creating a painting is not difficult; you just need a little imagination," says Kestutis. His work invites the viewer to see familiar landscapes from a fresh perspective, balancing sophistication, simplicity, and personal interpretation. Based in Vilnius, Lithuania, Kestutis breaks down visible landscapes into fundamental elements and rebuilds them with stylized blocks of color, soft lines, and earthy tones. He works from a studio in the city and spends summers closer to nature to find inspiration away from urban distractions. Outside the studio, he enjoys walking through natural settings, discovering ideas, and photographing interesting buildings in small Lithuanian towns to reinterpret in his paintings, often accompanied by jazz or moments of quiet reflection.
Artist Statement
When most people think of landscapes, they picture shimmering water, vibrant foliage, or clouds drifting across the sky. I approach nature differently. I see it through the lens of architecture, focusing on form and structure rather than traditional representation. Instead of simply portraying the outdoors, I experiment with composition, inviting the viewer to reconsider familiar scenery from a new perspective.
In my process, I break down the visible landscape into its essential elements and rebuild it on canvas using stylized blocks of color. The result can feel like a collage assembled from cut shapes, unconcerned with conventional perspective. The sense of depth in my work is not meant to heighten realism, but to spark visual curiosity. Contrasts in tone, subtle transitions within color fields, and variations in texture bring variety to each piece.
My paintings are defined by soft, flowing lines and a careful restraint in detail and earthy hues. Rather than overwhelm with intricacy, I prefer a measured approach that leaves space for personal interpretation. I choose my canvas dimensions and adjust the surface texture depending on the idea behind the work. I primarily use palette knives, though brushes also play their part in shaping the final composition.
