Artist Jian Ma creates minimalist oil paintings of imagined architectural spaces shaped by light, memory, and silence. "I realized that I was not interested in painting architecture itself, but in using it as a visual language to express memory, emotion, and human experience," says Jian. Her practice evolved through a fascination with how empty rooms, quiet corners, and shifting light can suggest human presence without depicting people directly. By reducing each composition to its essential elements, she creates contemplative spaces that invite personal reflection. Jian works in a quiet, organized studio where she occasionally listens to soft music while painting. When not making art, she visits museums and exhibitions, reads, and observes the overlooked details of everyday architecture that often inspire future work.
Artist Statement
I explore the relationship between architecture, memory, and silence through minimalist spatial compositions. Working primarily in oil on canvas, I create imagined architectural environments that exist between reality and recollection. Rather than depicting specific places, I use space, light, geometry, and absence as visual languages to express emotion and personal memory.
I am inspired by the quiet presence of architecture—the feeling of an empty room, a distant horizon, a passageway, or a moment of transition. These are not physical locations, but emotional landscapes where solitude, memory, and the passage of time quietly unfold. Through reduction and restraint, I remove unnecessary elements, allowing light, proportion, and silence to become the central subjects of each painting.
Each series approaches these ideas from a different perspective while sharing a common exploration of stillness, atmosphere, and emotional space. Through carefully balanced compositions, subtle color relationships, and layered oil techniques, I create paintings that invite viewers to pause, reflect, and reconnect with their own memories and imagination.
