Jeff Froula

Artist Jeff Froula creates impressionistic oil paintings inspired by the oak woodlands, agricultural valleys, open fields, and coastal environments of Northern California. "I seek to reveal the quiet drama found in familiar places," says Jeff. Based in Walnut Creek, he developed his foundation in classical realism at the Atelier School of Classical Realism in Oakland, where he studied under mentor David Hardy from 1999 to 2003. He continues to develop his practice through online studies with artist Matt Smith at Tucson Art Academy Online. Most of Jeff's paintings are inspired by working plein air, allowing him to observe and capture the natural colors and changing atmosphere of the landscape firsthand. He works from a small, cluttered garage-conversion studio, a setup that encourages him to spend more time painting outdoors. When not painting, Jeff enjoys playing tennis and sailing on the Bay.
Artist Statement
I am drawn to the familiar landscapes of Northern California, from oak woodlands and open fields to agricultural valleys and coastal environments. I seek to reveal the quiet drama found in these familiar places, capturing the impact of a particular moment through light, atmosphere, and painterly brushwork.
Most of my paintings begin outdoors, where I can observe the landscape directly and respond to its changing light and color. I typically paint on location for about three hours before returning to the studio to continue refining the work. I use selective detail to emphasize what first drew me to a scene, allowing broader, expressive brushwork to preserve the immediacy of the experience.
My goal is not to record a landscape exactly as it appears, but to capture what makes a particular place memorable. I hope my paintings invite viewers to slow down, look more closely, and bring their own interpretations to the experience.
